Dark past of the hedgerow and the caging of hawthorn

Humans are the only species on earth that pay to live.

We have been disconnected from the land, the earth, the mother.

This disconnection leaves us fearful; this fear drives us to abuse her, to see her as an object, as a resource to exploit.

The greedy few hoard Water, Food, Fire, Medicine and sell them back to us. The greedy few have created systems to sell us synthetic mimics of life sustenance - that the land gives as gifts . The greedy few have monotonised survival…

These systems that the greedy few have created destroy the earth, the mother and ourselves. These systems are designed to keep us disconnected from the collective consciousness of earth and the spirit of love. We are consumed by fear and betray our wild selves over and over again. We keep running back onto the conational hamster wheel of the next 'Revolution ' - to fuel the systems and machines of Capitalism, Colonisation and Patriarchy.

We are taught to be sons and daughters of the machine. When at heart, we are sons and daughters of Mother Earth. Capitalism, Colonisation and Patriarchy are beliefs born out of fear and are keeping us off our path - our truth -  our gifts to this world. We should be flowing our energy into the radical revolution of self-love and collective consciousness. To be holding and restoring the earth - Not abusing, caging and pumping her for all she is worth ....

Severances to the land of Bratina have had many forms and time stamps in History. One came with the Inclosure Act of 1773, which used Hawthorn's wild layers of tangled branches with thorns to manipulate and cage her into a hedgerow, becoming a fixed boundary wall.

Thousands of new hedgerows were planted, Using Hawthorn's beautiful, loving, and wild free spirit to twist and cage her into a natural barrier to the wildland. The bill took away 6.5 million acres of land from our ancestors, forcing them to disconnect from Mother Earth and work for the Industrial Revolution.

Hedgerows hold immense value in today’s world. They act as vital wildlife corridors, bridging fragmented and isolated ecosystems. These natural highways offer crucial sanctuary for wildlife, allowing them to safely roam, rest, and forage for food throughout their journeys.

But the Hawthorn is much more than barrier, than an object - You can feel this when you come across a free-standing hawthorn that has escaped the caging of the hedgerow.

She is Wild and free. Her dense flowing branches create beautiful depth and flow.

She is Community: many birds and insects love to raise their family in her thorny protective wild branches

She is Heart:  her blossoms hold medicines for us to feel safe enough to open up our hearts and be fully seen

Before the inclosure Act, 6.5 million acres of land were common. Not one individual owned - the collective Community had the right to the land and were the caretakers. Our ancestors had the right to forage their medicine, fire, food and graze their livestock - The land sustained their life through the gifts of the mother earth - They respected her and knew her wisdom - they still had parts of their sprit wild and connected to collective consciousness.

But with one flick of a pen and hedgerows planted, a greedy few owed this land...

Severing people from their land,

From their ancestors' way of life,

From bring into service resources and living off the gifts of the earth,

From their spiritual connection to the earth,

Losing this right to the land meant our ancestors were forced into survival mode—for many, their only choice was to serve their connection to the earth from the mother and move into the new industrial cities. Becoming a small cog in a machine of the 'industrial revolution' and the urbanisation of Britain - driving a wedge between us that little bit further - enforcing the class system that keeps us repressed and making the poor poorer and the rich richer.

Hawthorn is the reminder of love, Community and wild spirit.

So when you are lucky enough to find a free flowing, uncaged, wild hawthorn.

take a moment,

take a breath,

And remember your wildness ….

We are on a collective journey to heal and rewild not just the land but ourselves.

In a system that wants to twist and model you into a hedgerow, to choose fear instead of love, to block others out and be caged, to stop you from stepping into your light, your truth, your gifts.

Be radical in stillness and tune into Mother Earths wisdom.

Be more like a free-standing wild hawthorn -  radically wild and full of love.

Love and Go Genlty,

Joseph
